"One Hundred and Ten Years Later - A Tribute to H. W. Watrous" oil 24"x28" $6500

"One Hundred and Ten Years Later - A Tribute to H. W. Watrous"  oil on linen  24"x28"  2018   $6500

This piece was created to enter in an American Women Artists competition for a show scheduled at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, CA opening in August 2018. The Haggin selected 13 pieces from their collection for the artists to be inspired by.  This one is inspired by Watrous' "Sophistication", 1908.  Before the model came, I was carefully setting up my "scene" to paint from life using my mother's very old chair.  With wild cranberries on the saucer, I thought about putting in a black bird but thought better of it.  Two weeks later when I was researching Mr. Watrous I discovered he put black birds on tables or chairs with his beautifully profiled women, in at least three of his paintings.  So I put the bird in.  Like "Sophistication" the model is profiled, her chair is at an angle, she is all dressed up having tea, she has a black feather in her hat, and her feet are cut out of the compposition.  Mr. Watrous painted rather tight and detailed, as I am inclined to do.  Otherwise mine is quite different.

Judging is subjective, and like many other worthy pieces, this one was not juried into the show.  I am attending the event anyway as they are offering a "Best Painting Practices" workshop, as well as paint-outs, symposium, and other events for members.  Meantime, I am sending the painting to New York.
